British Typhoons in 2016 Baltic Air Policing mission

The Royal Air Force (RAF) detachment or the Eurofighter Typhoon fighters plus support units will be deployed to Amari air base in Estonia until the end of August this year. The 4 british jets will help to secure NATO’s Airspace over Baltic Countries - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The fighters will respond to any provocation or aggression from Russia or others.

The situation near Baltic Countries airspace is very tense. For example during last deployment in 2015 only the RAF fighters (besides other BAC participants jets) were scrambled 17 times, and intercepted over 40 Russian aircraft.

No. 140 Expeditionary Air Wing RAF commanding officer Wing Commander Gordon Melville said: "I am very proud to be leading 140 Expeditionary Air Wing as we again provide air policing support to our Estonian NATO allies”.
